Some great applications for Windows

I’m a real Linux user but for my gaming needs I also have Windows 7 installed. It’s one of the nicest Windows’ so far. Here’s some application’s I use when running Windows.

foobar2000

foobar2000

Don’t we all love music? I needed a lightweight music player with library function’s. After a few minutes of looking I found this really cool application called foobar2000. It supports a lot of format’s including MP3, MP4, AAC, WMA, Ogg Vorbis, CD audio, Flac and more. Has gap-less playback, so when your listening to your favorite split-mix CD it won’t stop playing between two song’s.

Defraggler and CCleaner

I don’t have to tell most of you what the use of CCleaner is but I’m going to just to be sure. CCleaner scans your PC for unneeded cache, history etc. and cleans these. It also feature a nifty registry cleaner this will keep it nice and fast because it will remove any unwanted and un-needed entry’s.

From the same developer there’s also a great defragmentation program. It’s faster then the window’s built-in defragmentation, but it’s just as safe. It also allows you to defrag single files and defragment your free space; this moves all files close together.

Both we’re made by the guy’s from Piriform. They also made a few other system maintance application’s and information application’s.

Stop CPU frequency scalling from asking for password

CPU frequency scaling is a great technology to save power and control your CPU temperature; the lower the scale the lower the temperature. But the really handy Gnome panel applet keeps asking for a password, because it needs elevated system privileges to change the frequency. I’ve found a few way’s to stop the nagging; some good for single user system’s, some for multi user system’s.

The first is to change the default value for org.gnome.CPUFreqSelector in polkit-1. This allows any user on the system to change the CPU frequency. I advise against this method because it allows ALL users to change the scaling (Some people might want this).

First Person Tetris

Finally someone made a first person Tetris, yes that’s right Tetris. With a twist but you’ll notice that when you play it. Also try the night-mode if you think the game is too easy.

I hope you’ll enjoy this game as much as I did.

Installing Silverlight and Flash 10 on Fedora 12 64-bit

I had a few problems installing flash and at first I couldn’t find Silverlight for Linux. Just to help you guy’s I’ll write this guide. Let’s start with the most used plugin: Flash.

1. Add the Adobe repository

The first step is to add the Adobe repository. This allows you to install and update the plugin using YUM. Go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ and select YUM for Linux. Install the RPM and enter the root password when prompted. You now have the Adobe repository available in YUM.

2. Installing Flash and nspluginwrapper.i686

If you want to use Flash in 64-bit you need the install nspluginwrapper.i686 and some other package’s. Why? Because the 64-bit flash-plugin for linux is a beta and we want to use the stable version. The wrapper will allow you to use the 32-bit plugin on your 64-bit browser. Enter the following command in to a terminal.

su -c ‘yum install flash-plugin nspluginwrapper.x86_64 \
nspluginwrapper.i686 alsa-plugins-pulseaudio.i686 \
libcurl.i686′

It will ask for your root password. When it’s finished restart your browser and check if the install was a success.

3. Installing Silverlight

There is no Silverlight available for Linux but the mono-project made a open-source implementation called Moonlight. Installing it is very easy because it works as a Firefox addon and not like a normal browser-plugin. Get it here. Just click the big install button and a nice guide appears explaining anything you need to know. Now wasn’t that easy.

4. Enjoy your favorite online content

Now it’s time to enjoy your favorite online movies, animation’s and games. Like newgrounds or ABS.

Homebrew on the Wii

No I’m not going to write another guide about installing Homebrew on to the Wii. There’s a great tutorial available at Wiibrew (The best Wii Homebrew Wiki). You can find the tutorial at this address:

Lazy new theme

Because I’m to lazy to make my own theme I downloaded a free one. It’s called Mystique and was made by Digital Nature. It’s really easy to change the background and some other colour’s using the theme’s special setting page.

Savage is a FPS/RTS-mix (with a few RPG elements). The commander running in RTS-mode will tackle the resource management, develop a tech tree, plan a tactile and strategic attack plan. Leading up to 64 player into battle. While the other team is trying to destroy yours. You need to work together to succeed and be victorious.

Set in a unique fantasy world, called Newerth (New Earth?), ages from here where humans and beast fight for their existence. Choose to fight for the humans, armed with science and technology, or take the side of the beast-horde, using nature and magic. Each side has it’s unique advantages and disadvantages, it’s own leader and style of battle. What’s your style?

After S2Games released Savage as Freeware some mod’s have been released at first there was the new standard SFE. Now on behalf of S2Games and the SFE developers Newerth.com has continued developing a new content patch for Savage called XR. It adds some mayor new feature’s to S2Games great game like a auto-updater, a shader system, squad management, stats, better animations and ton’s more. They even integrated the Samurai Wars Mod that came with the Collector Edition.

Currently XR is at RC3 so it’s still a beta, a great beta, get it now at Newerth.com.
